ABOUT US

Who we are, where we come from, and where we're headed as a church family

Who we are

Eastside Christian Church exists to develop more and better disciples of Christ who passionately serve God and humanity. We seek to be a community that gives glory to Christ above all things and welcomes all people to join us in worshipping Him. Eastside is a church where anyone can be transformed by the story of Jesus Christ.

Here at Eastside Christian Church, we don’t care where you’ve come from or what you’ve done. We’re a church that accepts all kinds of people from all walks of life.

Where we come from

Eleven people met on September 20, 1962, to establish Eastside Christian Church and to dedicate it to the work of the gospel mission. The first meeting was held in the garage of Glen and Wilma Burnes on 807 French Street in Jeffersonville, Indiana, on October 7, 1962, with 29 people present. This meeting was the result of prayer and planning by our founding minister, F. Delbert Gray, and the Men's Independent Christian Mission of Louisville, Kentucky, which offered financial support. About six weeks later, the Masonic Temple in downtown Jeffersonville offered its facilities until a permanent location could be found.

The Louisville area churches donated $10,000 toward the purchase of the Park Place Methodist Church building at 200 West Park Place in Jeffersonville. Mrs. Gray's grandfather made the first pulpit. Songbooks were donated by Standard Publishing Company and a piano was loaned by the Bethany Christian Church. The first service at the newly purchased building was on December 2, 1962, with 50 present. Nine people, including June and Delbert Gray, became members that day. The first leaders, four elders, and eight deacons were elected on December 29, 1963.

Where we're headed

What's the bottom line? We love Jesus, God’s Word, and each other and we're passionate about taking the message and hope of Jesus Christ to the city and community around us.

Hope for the future. Hope for better. Hope for progress. Hope in Jesus. And as we move forward as a church family, inclusion and belonging remain at the center of who we are as followers of Christ. We know you belong here, and we'd love to welcome you home.

What this means for you

What does this mean for you? Most importantly, you're always welcome at Eastside Christian Church. We're saving a seat for you. Wherever you're at in your faith journey, you'll always be accepted as part of the Eastside family.
