A Week at Camp

Thursday, June 18th, 2009

The motto of Scenic Hills Christian Camp is “Shaping Lives for Christ”. I was privileged to spend a week at the camp with several of our elementary students this past week. The camp has been in existence for forty years and is located on eighty beautiful acres near Spring Mill, Indiana.

Church camp allows students (and adults) to leave behind video games, cell phones, television, and sports practices to focus on discipleship and the glory of God’s creation. During free time students make new friends while playing “the old fashioned way” i.e. tetherball, carpetball, a playground, swimming, volleyball and other group games. The emphasis is always on God and developing Christian character.

One of the great treasures of Scenic Hills is the people. Many volunteers give countless hours to insure that a camper’s experience is life changing. Children can begin a pilgrimage to Scenic Hills as early as the summer before they enter kindergarten, and many college students come back to volunteer or work at the camp.

Compared to other camps the cost of Scenic Hills is modest and scholarships are always found for those in need. Scenic Hills is a small intimate setting with a personal touch. Each student is shepherded within a small group and counselors are sensitive to special needs and concerned about the spiritual and emotional development of each individual.

As a parent looking back over your child’s K-12 journey, I guarantee you will not say “gee I wish they’d played in one more allstar game, taken one more class or joined one more club” but you may regret it if your missed an opportunity for your child to learn about the principles of God in such a special setting away from the distractions of life in this century.

Movie Night

Wednesday, June 10th, 2009

Last Friday night I was sitting outside at the office. It was one of those rare moments when there is no one around, so I took the moment to take in some rays outside, well me and a dozen construction workers. I was thinking about the movie night I had planned for that evening for the ladies. I was thinking will it be fun, will the ladies like it, and of course will people come? You know the normal anxieties we face when planning events.   So I started praying for it to be a fun night and that God would send some new faces to the event.

The evening was a ton of fun. We had 28 ladies come and watch Deborah Carr and Cary Grant share in one of the greatest love story movies of all time, the 1957 An Affair to Remember.

We had a blast!  What could be better, food, popcorn, diet coke, good friends, door prizes,  Cary Grant and of course Genie Blevins warm caramel popcorn.

What could make the evening even better? Well, of course Hugh Jackman stopping by for a visit would have been nice. Oh well maybe next time.

Connected…?

I’m sitting and sipping on my house blend at a local cafe. I love coming here every week and meeting new workers, introducing myself and getting to know them. It’s funny that when I pray, I am always praying for God to work on someone else. “Help them see the light, understand, have a change of heart…..see things MY way.” lol. Does anyone else get wrapped up in themselves and their own perspectives as I do? Going through an old box of pictures last night brought that into focus for me. Looking at moments and experiences from high school to the year I was married. It’s funny because I can recall where my head was at and where my heart as at. God has been busy…or better said, I have kept Him busy…;)

It is actually slightly disturbing to me how much He has taught me, grown me and embraced my quirks. I am thankful that He sees me as useful because there are many days that I don’t think I have much to offer. Anyone else feel that way sometimes? The truth is though, that no matter what we go through, struggle with or experience success with…God can use anything to reach someones heart! So let’s not roll our eyes, let’s not talk so negative, let’s not push people away, let’s not play the victim….let’s rise up and do the exact opposite of what culture thinks we should do. Let’s be a Revolution!
